Why You Should Join a Writers Workshop

When it comes to improving your writing, one of the best methods available is joining a writers workshop. While we're hoping to one day allow online writers workshops through Try Creative Writing, for now, you have to look for ones in your area. Check our other articles to see how to find a writers workshop near you. In the meantime, here is a list of all the reasons why you should try joining a writers workshop.

  1. Writers Network

One of the best ways to get your name into the writing world is by building a writers network. A creative writing workshop is a perfect way to meet emerging authors like yourself, and to share your interests with one another. This also comes with the hope that once one of them succeeds as a writer, they will help you in your own journey to get published. This feature is one of the best aspects of writers workshops, as it can be difficult to pursue writing when nobody you know shows any interest in talking about the craft.

  2. Free Editing

While you're working on a novel, there's nothing better than getting people to review your work and provide you feedback. Unfortunately, professionals can charge upwards of one hundred dollars an hour, making editing a prohibitive process for aspiring writers. With a writing group, you are able to get this editing for free as you will be given feedback by the other people attending the writers workshop. This will help you find errors in your writing, and possibly give you new insights into the parts of your story that work, and those that seem to fall flat.

  3. Exposure to Different Styles

When you write, it's very easy to get stuck in your own style of the craft and never expand beyond your small niche. While you can read books and see how other writers work, it's not quite the same when you don't have the chance to talk to them and see their writing in progress. In a writing workshop, you will be able to see how other people write and the different approaches that can be taken. You'll also be able to see the writing in an earlier stage so you can get a feel for what the style might sound like before it gets perfected. And of course, with the writer there beside you, you can ask them why they chose their style and see when it might work for you.

  4. Inspiration

Probably my favorite reason to attend writers workshops, inspiration is a huge benefit. Sitting around with other writers, reading their stories and hearing their interpretations of your own, there is so much creative energy floating around the room. Breathing that in, you'll be amazed how much drive you have to write when you leave the class, and how many new things you might have thought of during the workshop. Take advantage of this enthusiasm and use every writers workshop as a way to foster new ideas and develop your existing ones.

Overall, there are few things that can help your writing as much as building a writers network at writing workshops. Meet with other writers, share your love for the art form, and ultimately, get everything you can out of the writing group.
