Introduction to Book Editing

When trying to tackle book editing, you're in for a big task. Sure, you have finished writing your book, but the next step is making it something you're proud of. Here are a few tips to help you with editing writing and turning your first draft into a novel.

First, accept the fact that your first draft isn't very good. When you finally are done writing your fiction book, you're going to have this grand vision in your head of all that you've done. That view is going to be slightly exaggerated, as your memory of your work is going to be almost infinitely better than it actually is. That's okay, it's a first draft. What matters is that you are able to take what's there, and make it into what's in your head.

The next step of book editing is to take it slow. If you thought there was a lot to do when writing a fiction book, wait til you try editing writing. There's going to be a lot there, and you won't be able to edit it all at once. Take your book in pieces, maybe try editing a chapter a day until you're able to polish the entire thing. In this manner, you can make sure everything is well polished, without overwhelming yourself.

Finally, book editing is never a process you can do alone. Workshop your writing with other authors or even just enthusiastic readers. Those people don't have the intimate knowledge of your story that you do, and so, they provide a great amount of feedback on how the writing is. They will ease the editing process and help you improve your book immensely, while also giving you ideas for ways to take the book in different directions.

Overall, book editing is a challenging process that takes time, and collaboration with others. Don't let it intimidate you though because it's the editing that truly makes a story great.
