Novel Writing Software

For some people, seeing a section titled novel writing software almost seems strange. After all, how different is writing a novel than writing anything else? Couldn't you just use Microsoft Word to write your novel and be done with it? Yes and no. While Microsoft Word is perfectly fine for actually writing a book, it isn't the right software for building a book.

When looking at the available writing software on the market, there are a lot of different features that are offered. These software packages promote a different style of design that involves fully planning out your book, and then fleshing out the distinct elements into the story you want to tell. As such, most of these book writing software options are not really good for the actual writing process, and should be used purely for organization and design.

One of the most common features in the various novel writing software packages is organizers for characters and scenes. These organizers might include options to add pictures, as well as to provide descriptions and basic information about the character or scene. This referenced information makes it easier for you to keep things consistent in your story. In addition, as you write, you can connect characters and scenes to chapters, making it easy to track when you last referenced them and where they are used in your story.

For new authors, the templates offered can be appealing as well. These templates offer a basic structure that can help guide you through the writing process. Examples of what the templates might include are things like "Chapter 5 - Protagonist is in trouble." They might seem a little ridiculous at times, but these general structures do help give you an idea of the overall flow of a novel, and keep you on track to tell a complete story. While they might be extraneous for some people, for others, they can make or break the software options.

Finally, a nice final feature of the software is its options for novel analysis. When you include all of your chapters in the software, it provides a breakdown of each chapter's level on the various grading systems of reading level. In addition, you can see a pie chart showing how big each chapter is. Using these different tools, you can see where you might have slacked off in your novel, and what parts might be heavily weighted in the story. It's a good way to get a mile high view of your novel, without having to jump in and look at each chapter to see where it can be improved.

Overall, novel writing software isn't for everyone. For some people, all they need is to boot up Microsoft Word and they'll take care of the rest. But as you get started out in the industry, having a guide to keep you on task and direct your novel can be a tremendous value. We've tried to provide some valuable information on the different software options available, so check out the other articles that we have to offer and see what is right for you.
