MFA Creative Writing Rankings

As people consider applying for MFA programs, a lot of the same decisions that came into play when applying for college arise. While many people simply go to a local MFA program for the convenience, for those looking for the best MFA programs, they have a great set of rankings. You can read the full list of the Creative Writing MFA programs here, but we've tried to provide a general list of the best programs here as well. Next to each program, we have listed their rankings last year to show you the up and coming programs.

  • University of Iowa in Iowa City (1)

The University of Iowa program is a perennial favorite, ranking number 1 across the board in Poetry, Fiction and Nonfiction. The school is a large program with a low cost of living and a reasonably lengthed program clocking in at two years.

  • University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (2)

Overall, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor does well because of its strong rankings in Fiction and Poetry. It doesn't offer Nonfiction (University of Iowa is the only school on the list that does), but with a medium sized program, the Ann Arbor program is certainly a popular one.

  • University of Texas in Austin (5)

When looking at the University of Texas program, they made a lot of progress in the rankings because of the opportunities they offer. The program isn't as highly ranked in Poetry, but it has a strong ranking amongst fiction programs, and has the best funding among programs. In an area with low cost of living, it helps separate this program from the others.

  • University of Wisconsin in Madison (6)

When it comes to quality, the University of Wisconsin program is great. Ranked third for fiction and second for poetry, the program is easily in the top tier. A very small program in a low cost area, it's an intimate setting to help you grow as a writer.

  • University of Virginia in Charlottesville (3)

Another small program, University of Virginia's rankings are just behind those of Wisconsin. A small program, they have strong postgraduate placement, ensuring success for the writers that attend.

  • Brown University in Providence (7)

Brown does well on this list by having such a strong name throughout education. Their poetry and fiction programs are ranked pretty comparably, and with a small program, the school does well with a more academic focus.

  • Syracuse University in New York (11)

Syracuse comes next on the list and while their poetry rankings are low, the school does well in the fiction category. Another great feature of Syracuse is their strong funding, which is helped further by the low cost of the area.

  • University of Oregon in Eugene (10)

University of Oregon is a very selective school, in an average cost area.

  • New York University in New York City (8)

NYU is ranked slightly lower than the University of Oregon, but comes with the feature that the program is situated in a very expensive area (New York City). As such, budgeting for the program requires keeping in mind the increased expenses in living arrangements.

  • Cornell University in Ithaca, New York (9)

Cornell University is ranked slightly below NYU, but offers great opportunities for funding. The program is also incredibly selective with a very small number of people in the program currently.

  • Overall, it's hard to go wrong with any of these top ten programs. All of them have remained dominant amongst MFA programs, ensuring that attendance in the program will provide you with a prestigious degree that you will have going forward. We invite any attendees of these MFA programs and others to share their experiences with us.
